My Impressions on The New and Improved Champion Point System

I don't do well with changes. Sudden changes fill me with dread and anxiety. Therefore, it might not be surprising that ESO's Update 29 shook me to the core. With it, we didn't just get a new DLC and a free pet, no, we got a brand new Champion Point System.

I had just gotten my head around the previous one, so I shed a little tear, and tossed my controller away. It remained buried under a pillow for 36 hours, which should indicate just how upset I was. Getting to reallocate every skill and attribute point as well served to further increase my level of upset.

Champion Points are unlocked once your first character hits level 50. Points are account wide, which means that alternate characters can assign Champion Points right after being born. You can currently get your hands on 3600 Points, a number that sounds quite impossible to fathom. To my understanding, if you manage to get all 3600 Points, you'll be able to purchase and fully upgrade every ability in the Champion System.

As before, Champion Points are earned through experience. Each level (after 50, that is) is worth one CP. All you need to do to get Points, is to play the game. A simple solution to a simple dilemma, that is.

Allocating said points is a dilemma more complicated. It's taken me this long to figure out the basics of the new system. I don't know if that goes to show the level of my intelligence, or the complexity of the system... still, I was left thoroughly confused. Now, as I have the basics down, I can see the benefits of the new and improved Champion Point System.

We are given three Constellation, each filled with Passive and Active Stars. Each Constellation focuses on a specific area of the game. Warfare focuses on combat, offering perks to damage done, healing done and received, and bafflement of enemies. Fitness focuses on defence, and improving Attributes. My favourite is the Craft Constellation; it offers perks to everyday skills such as Crafting, Fishing, and Stealing. It feels like a stress-free zone for me, the area that doesn't have a "real" meaning.

Unless, of course, you're a hardcore crafter or angler.

I've taken a "pick out the active stars you like, unlock them, and then get all the passives" -sort of approach to the Constellations. I still don't know what you're really supposed to be doing, but this works for me. Unlocked active stars are then placed on the Champion Bar. You can only have four per Constellation. Whereas reallocating Champion Points has a small price on it, changing Active stars is free. This is where the new system got interesting.

Through Active, assigned stars, you can change your entire build. This new feature allows the adoption of different roles within the game. One character can now be a healer, DD, and tank according to your needs. I'm still going to have a bunch of different builds, but this feature does make it easier to play with only one character.

In conclusion, I can only say that the New Champion Point System left me overwhelmed. Changes rarely sit right with me, and with so many moving parts, Constellation still make anxious. I have made a video about this entire star-lit sky, hoping my ramblings will offer more insight as to how I see the new System.

I'll continue to explore the new system, and maybe, by the time Zen launches another overhaul, I'll have figured this one out.

Love,

Heather
